Things A Gentleman Should Own
There are tons of things a gentleman should own; some I think should be essential and others definitely optional, depending on your personal preference. Here are things we think a gentleman should own.
A quick side note we’d just like to point out before we mention our list; a gentleman is not a gentleman based on what he wears or what he owns, it’s his character. Anyone can wear suits and ties or own nice things but it’s your character that determines if you’re truly a gentleman.
With that said, wouldn’t you want your presentation to match that of your gentlemanly characteristics? Here are things we think every gentleman should own.
Tailored Suit
Suits are generally expensive and it’s great if you’re able to purchase multiple ones but it’s not necessary, especially if you’re on a budget. You really only need one good tailored suit. And I’d like to emphasize the “tailored” part because every person is unique in their own size and shape. You wouldn’t want to look like you’re suffocating in a suit too tight or look like a little kid wearing their parent’s clothes in one way too big.
Here’s a quick suit chart that may help you out when it comes to what to look for when getting it tailored:
Cologne/Signature Scent
Smelling good is always a good thing, trust me, but having a good consistent signature scent will have you remembered.
Just imagine talking to a young lady, who has some nice, distinct smelling perfume or shampoo/lotion that captures your attention when they walk by. It works the same exact way for you when it comes to catching women’s attention as well.

Nice Leather Wallet
A nice leather wallet will last you a very long time to carry your ID, cards and money. Nothing too fancy, nothing too bulky.
Here are some suggestions for nice leather wallets.
A Pair Of Nice Dress Shoes
Although you probably won’t wear your nice dress shoes every single day, it’s there for all the occasions where you’d need to dress up (in your tailored suit). Plus, it’ll last you for quite some time so it’ll be a good investment.
The recommendation would be to get black dress shoes but if your budget allows it, grab a pair of brown ones as well. As for the style, you can’t go wrong with a black cap Oxford.
Here are some suggestions for nice Oxford shoes. Also, here’s a quick shoe chart to help out:
Leather Belt
A simple leather belt will do the trick but keep in mind, it should match with your dress shoes. So if you end up going with black dress shoes, you should have a black leather belt to match.
Here are some suggestions for leather belts.
Dress Socks
Surprisingly, I talk to a lot of people who don’t own dress socks and just wear standard white cotton socks with their dress clothes. If you’re in a tailored suit, your socks will always show and it’ll be tacky having black shoes with white cotton socks.
Black dress socks are the safe bet. Here are some suggestions for black dress socks.
Necktie
No need for fancy (or silly) designs on your ties, something solid would work just fine. I’m not against fancy designs but some only go with certain shirts/suits and having a good solid is a safe bet for any dress shirt or suit.
Here are some suggestions for neckties.
A Nice Watch
There are watches that are worn for different occasions but you don’t need to wear one for all of them. If you’re on a budget, having a nice watch for times where you’ll be wearing a suit or going to a formal event is all you really need. You

White Button-Down Shirt/Dress Shirts
Originally, I just put “dress shirts” but I feel having a nice white button-down is the safest way you can go if you’re on a budget. A white button-down can go with basically any color suit and you can also wear it for more casual affairs.
Swiss Army Pocket Knife
Having a Swiss army pocket knife will be handy in so many ways, I’m actually surprised more people don’t own one. I mean, it has a corkscrew, bottle opener, screwdriver, etc that are all handy for everyday use.
Here is our suggestion for a Swiss Army Pocket Knife.
Nice Blazer
For times where you don’t need to wear a suit and it’s less formal, having a nice blazer can go with many different outfits whether you’re wearing jeans or pants.
Here are some suggestions for blazers.
A Good Comb
Unless you’re sporting the clean shaven head look, there’s going to be a time where you’ll need to comb your hair. Having a good comb readily available is always helpful to just fix up a little, especially if it’s windy outside.
Here are some suggestions for combs.
Grooming Kit
Keeping yourself well-groomed is a must. You don’t want to look like you’ve been trapped on an island.
Here are some suggestions for grooming kits.
Sunglasses
Having a pair of nice sunglasses that are well crafted, fits with every outfit you wear and that go well with your face’s shape is something you should definitely have. There will be plenty of times where you’ll need to wear sunglasses so you’re not constantly squinting out in the sun.
Here are some suggestions for sunglasses.
Tools/Toolbox
Now you don’t have to be an expert handyman but when there are some simple things that you should be able to repair yourself, you’ll need the proper tools.
Here are some suggestions on toolboxes.
